Does it work?
- -Train through a full range of motion by default. Pooled across trials, full ROM beats cut-down partial reps for strength and for lower-limb growth. What's new is the hype around lengthened partials — reps performed only in the stretched half. The honest read is that they're a legitimate alternative, not an upgrade: recent randomized trials find them equivalent to full reps, and a 2025 meta-analysis of regional hypertrophy found the difference between training at longer versus shorter muscle lengths was statistically trivial.
How to apply
- -Make full range of motion the default on every lift you can perform safely through one.
- -If mobility, joint pain, or the equipment forces you to shorten a rep, cut the top — not the bottom. Keep the stretched portion.
- -Lengthened partials are a reasonable tool late in a set or on isolation work, where fatigue has already made the shortened half unproductive.
- -Don't trade load or progression for range-of-motion theatrics. Progressive overload still outranks every ROM variable in this list.
The catch
- -The stretch-mediated hypertrophy claim ran ahead of its evidence. Individual trials favouring long muscle lengths exist, but the 2025 systematic review of regional hypertrophy found effects that were trivial at proximal, mid-belly, and distal sites alike.
- -The comparison itself was blunt: across the pooled studies the long and short conditions differed by only about 22% of mean muscle length, so the test was less sharp than the headlines implied.
- -Partials let you use heavier loads, which makes it easy to mistake a bigger number on the bar for a better stimulus.
Common mistakes
- -Loading a deep stretch position aggressively on a joint that isn't ready for it — build tolerance before adding load there.
- -Calling reps 'lengthened partials' when they're really just reps cut short by fatigue or ego.
- -Sacrificing steady week-to-week progression to chase a range-of-motion nuance the evidence says is worth very little.
