Does it work?
- -Barely, and not for the reason it's sold. A 2026 meta-analysis of 24 randomized trials found astaxanthin lowered creatine kinase — a blood marker of muscle damage — and possibly lactate dehydrogenase, while doing nothing at all for VO2max, time-trial performance, or maximal power. The ISSN's 2026 antioxidant position stand ranks it among the better-supported antioxidants, but that is a low bar: the outcome it reliably moves is a blood test, not your training.
How much · when
- -4–12 mg/day for 4–12 weeks is the range the ISSN position stand cites; a single dose before a session does nothing.
- -It's fat-soluble, so take it with a meal that contains fat.
- -If you use it at all, use it during a heavy block or a congested competition schedule, where slightly faster turnaround between sessions has some value.
- -Treat it as optional. It sits well below sleep, protein, and calories in anything that actually determines recovery.
The catch
- -The headline result is a drop in creatine kinase. CK tracks muscle damage only loosely and is a poor predictor of how recovered you feel or how well you perform the next day.
- -The lactate dehydrogenase effect was larger but came with substantial heterogeneity between trials, so treat it as unsettled. Malondialdehyde and interleukin-6 didn't move at all.
- -Nothing improved in VO2max, time trials, or maximal workload — the outcomes people actually buy it for.
- -Like any high-dose antioxidant, blunting exercise-induced oxidative stress can blunt the adaptation you trained for. The ISSN's 2026 position is explicit that supraphysiological dosing can work against you.
Better option
- -Sleep, protein, and enough calories move recovery far more than any antioxidant capsule. If you want a supplement in this lane, tart cherry has more outcome-level evidence than marker-level evidence.
Safety
- -Well tolerated in trials at 4–12 mg/day; the most commonly noted effect is harmless orange-pink pigmentation of the skin at higher intakes.
- -Data much beyond 12 weeks is thin, so treat long-term daily use as unstudied rather than proven safe.
- -Don't stack it with a pile of other high-dose antioxidants — the adaptation-blunting risk is dose-dependent, and megadosing vitamins C and E is the clearest example.
